Dr. Elizabeth Gerstner is a neuro-oncologist at the Mass General Cancer Center. She obtained her bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Brown University and earned her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she also served as Chief Resident in Neurology while completing her residency training. Dr. Gerstner subsequently came to Boston for a Neuro-Oncology Fellowship and earned a Master’s in Medical Science from Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gerstner's research is focused on using neuro-imaging to probe tumor biology as well as determining how to incorporate promising imaging techniques into clinic trials. She has extensive experience working with clinical trials investigating new treatments for brain cancer and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on several multi-institutional trials. In addition, Dr. Gerstner co-runs a lab at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging focused on using advanced physiological imaging and deep learning to better understand brain tumor biology and improve the care of patients with both primary and metastatic brain tumors. She strives to bring together teams with broad and complementary expertise to answer clinically relevant questions in neuro-oncology.
Dr. Gerstner's research accomplishments have been recognized by a number of prestigious awards, including the Clinical Research Scholar awarded by the Mass General Cancer Center, the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Neuro-Oncology Scientific Award awarded by the American Academy of Neurology. She also received the Neuro-Oncology Fellow Teaching Award in recognition of her outstanding teaching to trainees. Dr. Gerstner’s research has received funding from the National Cancer Institute, among other foundations. She has been featured in many notable medical journals highlighting her research in collaboration with colleagues at MGH and various physician-scientists from other prominent medical institutions.
